Yuletide Awards: Part 1

I decided to liven up my recs, I'll give them in the form of awards. These come in no particular order.


Best Fic Exploring The Intersection of Fandom, The Female Gaze, Desire, and RPF... When Fics Take on a Life of Their Own(Feminist Ryan Gosling, Fandom | gen)

A fanfic writer and Feminist Ryan Gosling discuss celebrity culture, gender and theory, and the political perils of Fassavoy fic.

Ever just read one of those fics where you're reduced to nodding at your screen and saying "this" out loud as if it meant anything to anyone? It is a bit heavy on feminist theory, but not in a way that puts you out of the story. If you enjoy Feminist Ryan Gosling, you'll enjoy this fic.


Best Fic On The Topic of Occupy Wall Street...Blackadder's Fifth Column(Blackadder | gen)

The Occupy London site was small, but growing. Ed Blackadder had a salaried personal assistant; a job as a financial consultant for several major banks in the EC postcodes; and an eviction notice from his Clerkenwell flat (bloody squatters).

It has been a bit since we last heard from Edmund Blackadder. Good to see he's just as terrible and involved with current events as always.


Best Fic On The Topic of Physics and Occupy Wall Street... The F**cking Movie Never Motherf**cking Ends (@MayorEmanuel | gen)

There's a million fucking universes, but most of them are the same old shit.

This fic is a continuation of the @MayorEmanuel story. If you're not familiar with it, someone took up tweeting as Rahm Emanuel when Mr. Emanuel was running for mayor in Chicago. It tracked his delightful exploits riding around in David Axelrod's Civic, visiting Chicago landmarks. I won't spoil the original story. SPOILER ALERT: The real Rahm Emanuel is mayor of Chicago.

This story is set in an alternate universe. @MayorEmanuel is still the same. Breaking into houses, calling people dicks, eating at famous Chicago restaurants. Everything is brought up to date with the discussion of OWS and Blago.


Best Crossover... Do You See What I See?(Boardwalk Empire,Downton Abbey | gen)

Hell passes daily before Sybil Crawley's eyes while she serves in a field hospital in France. She believes that she is becoming accustomed to the horrors of war, stoic to the unabated suffering.

Until she meets Richard.

Boardwalk Empire and Downton Abbey crossover in this AU. It is a genius mix, and I'm not sure how anyone did do it before. Sibyl and Richard are both quite in character. Even if you are unfamiliar with the canon of either series, you would still probably appreciate this story.


Best 'Five Times' Type Fic...I Died So I Could Haunt You (Mass Effect | F!Shepard/Garrus)

Garrus dreams of other lives

It is F!Shepard/Garrus. What is not to like?


Best Continuation of a French Movie...Batignolles(Paris, je t'aime | Eli/Gaspard)

Eli didn't know if it was the kind of connection people spoke of, but he did know that he had never taken off running down unfamiliar streets to find somebody before.

Granted, any Les Chansons d'Amor fic would have taken this category, but there weren't any, so this takes this cake. This story is based on one of the segments from Paris, je t'aime. The segment, Le Marais, was one of my favorite from the movie and the whole thing clocks in at just over six minutes.


Best fic given to me (or the "ALL OF THE AWARDS" category)...So we all are growing young (Adventure Time | Bubblegum/Marceline)

Marceline may be a thousand years old, but Princess Bubblegum has been eighteen for a very long time.

Marceline! Princess Bubblegum! The Mushroom War! Glitter!

And people say that cartoons can't be serious. How much more serious can you get than the apocalypse and what comes after? Marceline and Bubblegum is a story that has has a long time to play out.




Next time: Byzantine Empire Steampunk, Revenge or maybe not, and way too much vaguely homoerotic Tintin fic.
